Grimm Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Clear and Wesen Danger

Remember the days when it was just Nick and Monroe against the Wesen world? It's clear that those days are gone.

On Grimm Season 5 Episode 2, Nick was on paternity leave while the rest of his team (plus poor in-the-dark Detective Pogue) investigated a rather grisly murder. To the team's credit, they deduced within about three seconds that the case was Wesen-related.

It was typically gruesome fare when the Wemlinger ripped out the throat of the unfortunate accountant, even as I saw it coming a mile away. It was also pretty obvious that sweet old lady Betty would turn out to be Wesen, too. The case ended with another ominous reminder of the coming war.

Before they got to all that, though, Nick brought the team to the place where Chavez and her contacts were killed in Grimm Season 5 Episode 1. There's only one problem: Mr. Clean's been at it again, and there was no trace of any bodies.

Happily, they did locate the clawmarks on the wall thanks to some fresh paint (validating Nick's claims), and the team wisely decided to vacate the premises. I was definitely amused by Monroe's assessment of the situation:

I think we should get out of here before someone tries to paint over *us*.

Monroe

Hank's temporary partnership with Detective Pogue (guest star Joseph Bertot) acted mostly as an obstacle course for the team as they tried to keep him from looking too closely at the case. Wu tangentially brought up something that should maybe should have been addressed more thoroughly.

Wu: This has *got* to be Wesen!
Hank: Can't wait to explain *that* to Pogue.
Wu: I'll visit you in the psych ward every Tuesday.

Wu was never really given justice for the time he spent in the psych ward after his terrifying encounter with the Aswang. He literally thought he was going crazy, and the rest of them let him. It still rankles me somewhat.

Fortunately for all involved, the situation with Pogue was resolved without any real suspicions on Pogue's part, but it didn't excuse what they did to Wu last season.

Meanwhile, Nick was discovering what it means to be a dad as he brought Adalind and baby Kelly home from the hospital. There are a couple of things worth pointing out in this subplot, one of which Monroe brings up: Nick's house.

I don't know if that place is cursed or something, but I'm with Monroe in that Nick should definitely move out ASAP. Hopefully, somewhere that random rampaging Wesen don't bust through every week. Not to mention the very painful, very fresh memories involving Juliette and her whole tragedy.

I'm not sure how I feel about Nick's relationship with Adalind. There was a cute scene where they bonded over food, and it's clear that the two have chemistry, but it just feels wrong on so many levels. Though Adalind had an absolutely priceless moment towards the end, when she asked a question we've all been wondering:

What if he's like me, or what if he's like you? What if he's some weird combination of both of us, like some Hexen-Grimm or Grimmenbiest?! I can't do this alone!

Adalind

I'll add my own query: did the fact that Adalind was "dressed" as Juliette at the time Kelly was conceived have any effect? Essentially, is this Nick and Adalind's baby, or is it Nick and Juliette's baby? The latter presents some interesting possibilities, like the fact that Baby Kelly could wind up a totally normal human.

Whatever happens, I truly hope that they don't do a rehash of the sort of Chosen One/Ultimate Destiny/Supreme Power ridiculous storyline that was Diana. Or, even worse, have some sort of showdown between the two siblings. We really, really don't need that here.

Before I sign off, here are a few miscellaneous thoughts and observations:

  • Meisner put in another appearance. When will we find out what he did with Diana? Could it somehow be her in the cell?
  • The FBI was understandably investigating Agent Chavez's disappearance. Nick, this is why you don't publicly threaten people, especially FBI agents in their own office!
  • Adalind outright stated that she no longer wanted to be a Hexenbiest anymore, which is certainly a switch given all the shenanigans she went through to get her 'Biest back.
  • On a related note, she also revealed that the suppressant potion she took will eventually wear off.

So, fellow Grimmsters, what did you think of "Clear and Wesen Danger"? Are you excited for the brewing Wesen war? What did you think of the Wemlinger? What about Nick and Adalind moving in together? Let us know in the comments below!

Even as Nick bonded with Adalind and baby Kelly, there were ominous new signs of the coming war in Grimm Season 5 Episode 2.

Join TV Fanatic Round Table Panelists Doug Wolfe, Allison Nichols, Robin Harry, and Kathleen Wiedel as they discuss the fallout from the latest episode of Grimm as conflict draws ever closer to Team Grimm in Portland!

Be sure to add your own thoughts and join in the discussion in the comments section below!

Grimm Round Table 1-27-15

Battle lines are being drawn for the foreshadowed war. Any new thoughts on what's going on?

Doug: I’m still pretty confused about it all. And curious. We still don’t know who the nameless group is - or what they’re hoping to achieve. Nor what the beef is. I assume Trubel was abducted because they want a Grimm on their side. Kind of a weird way to gain an ally though.

And of course whatever this mysterious “four-slash” enemy is, we know they need a lot of money for what they’re planning.

Allison: I'm with Doug. I'm completely confused. This episode showed that this group is organized. They have been building up their war chest, so this isn't just some group of rag tag Wesen who decided to start something. This group means business.

Robin: I have no bloody clue. My thoughts don't go far past what we've been shown; I assume there's an uprising of some dangerous Wesen who have considered themselves oppressed or marginalized in some way, and that Meisner's folks are trying to fight that. Who knows. Royals, Verrat, Reapers, Resistance... there are so many conspiring and secret groups on Grimm that I've stopped keeping track.

Kathleen: I definitely hope that they give us more to work with soon! Meisner's with the Resistance against the Royals, but he is also apparently opposed to whatever uprising is coming. Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily mean very much because Meisner's always been something of a wild card.

Have your thoughts changed on who Meisner is holding captive in the cell?

Doug: No. I still have no idea. It could be Juliette or Trubel, or someone else entirely.

Allison: I have no idea. I don't like how we are being kept completely in the dark. We know they have Trubel, so why not show us what's going on with her? It would only help to build suspense.

Robin: The kind of ferocity we heard coming from the cell makes it hard to tell. I don't think Meisner would have walked out if that was Juliette, so maybe it's Trubel. I like to think it's some unnamed player that we haven't met yet.

Kathleen: I think Trubel's more likely than Juliette, but we still haven't found out where Diana got off to after Meisner threw her grandfather out of the helicopter...

Preparing for Baby - Grimm

Monroe fervently suggested that Nick find a new home. Discuss.

Doug: I agree wholeheartedly with Monroe. That place has seen more action than Grand Central station at this point. Maybe it’s time for Nick to find new digs, preferably far from any innocent neighbors who might get killed as a result of his enemies going after him.

Allison: Nick should 100% move. There have been too many terrible things that have occurred there. Also, all the bad guys seem to know where he lives, so a move could also help Nick out in his Grimm life.

Robin: Not only should he move out, he should burn that house to the ground. Nick needs a nice condo on a really high floor, with security cameras and guards and only one entry and exit point.

Kathleen: You all make some really good points. Take a leaf out of Captain Renard's book, Nick, and find a more defensible location. Preferably one far away from neighbors who can get murdered so his enemies can have staging grounds.

Did you enjoy Hank being temporarily partnered with Detective Pogue?

Doug: I hated that part of the show. I mean we’ve just gone through this with Wu. It was unfair of Renard to put Hank into that situation again.

Allison: I'm with Doug. It wasn't really entertaining. I like having everyone in the know. I felt bad for Pogue because he was so left out of things, and he knew it.

Robin: I only enjoyed it because of everyone else's reactions. It was some much needed comic relief. Renard's eye roll at the "garden tool" murder weapon comment was a thing of beauty, and Wu's snark about Hank trying to explain the unexplainable was pretty funny.

Kathleen: It provided me with some amusement, but I think that Doug hit the nail on the head. We did just go through this with Wu, and it really wasn't handled very well. They even referenced how badly they handled it! I don't think they really brought anything new here.

Highlight a scene or quote that stood out for you positively or negatively.

Doug: Renard is coming off as a bit of a stunderhead, isn’t he? He knew full well those State Troopers were likely going to get their heads bit off, yet he still told Nick not to go after them. I’m not happy that the FBI is on Nick’s case, though it is logical that they are, given Nick’s performance when he went after Chavez.

Allison: I loved all the Nick and Adalind scenes. Their weird relationship is being handled really well. Nick making her a sandwich was adorable. I'm starting to love watching them together. I'm not saying I ship them or anything, but I love their weird chemistry.

Robin: Did I or did I not call all those portmanteaus for the baby last week?! I really liked Adalind's heart to heart with Rosalee. I liked that she doesn't want her witchiness back, and that she knew how horrific she was as a person before. Good job, writers, Adalind has officially won me over.

Kathleen: Robin, you've just brought up something I find incredibly frustrating: Adalind's character. Are we just supposed to accept her "I don't want to be a Hexenbiest anymore" line? After everything she's done? If only she'd had this revelation when pregnant with Diana...

Grimm Season 5 Episode 3 Review: Lost Boys

$

In certain particular ways, "Lost Boys" definitely felt like a throwback to early-series Grimm. From the unsubtle fairy tale adaptation to the direct references to Adalind's and Nick's "first times," it's almost like the writers were feeling sentimental for vintage Grimm Season 1!

The only problem is that we've moved well past Season 1, which leaves Grimm Season 5 Episode 3 feeling very much like bland filler in contrast with the heavily serialized stories we've had of late.

That's not to say that there weren't developments in the ongoing story arcs. Nick and Adalind wisely moved out of the home Nick had shared with Juliette and into an old paint factory ("Home, sweet home," Adalind remarked dryly.), for instance.

(Begin Rant) I know I said in previous reviews that I wouldn't harp on this again, but I just can't stand it. Nick just moved in with the woman who raped him. Just because he's a guy does not make this okay! If their gender roles were reversed, I guarantee that this would not be happening! (End Rant.)

Also, Meisner called on Captain Renard to pass along the news of the King's unfortunate demise. How much of that conversation were we supposed to believe? Did Viktor really offer Meisner the chance to kill the King in excange for Diana? I find that incredibly unlikely.

The biggest theme of this episode was definitely family. From the Captain's frustrated attempt to reunite with dear sweet Diana to Nick, Adalind, and Kelly's "beyond weird" situation to the little lost Wesen kids to Monroe and Rosalee, family took on many different forms in this episode.

Look, whatever kind of family you have, reality is relative. You know? Normal is just the middle of the mess.

Monroe

My sympathy for the little Wesen children family was tempered by the moment they showed the box with a number of locks of hair from previous "Mothers," presumably just as kidnapped and scared and now just as dead as the unfortunate Wendy.

They seemed perfectly down with murdering Rosalee when she tried to escape, and showed practically no remorse about Wendy's death. Nice budding little psychopaths, weren't they? And the venom with which Lily rejected Rosalee at the end was chilling.

Unfortunately, there was no real happy ending for them to find, as they ended up back in the system... and got ominously recruited to the Occultatem Libera army.

Speaking of ominous, it was finally confirmed that it was indeed Trubel that was locked up in Meisner's cell, and she didn't look to be in good shape. Was he brainwashing her into a weapon to fight in the coming war? And what side is he on, anyway?

I cannot imagine that Renard will be too happy when he finds out that Meisner is responsible for what's happened to Trubel, though he knew full well how much of a wildcard Meisner is. Indeed, the late lamented Sebastien warned Renard quite specifically about Meisner.

What is the man up to? I hope that we do get an explanation sooner rather than later, because the way they've been doling out information in tiny scraps is really more frustrating than intriguing.

Some final thoughts before the end:

  • The titular Wesen children didn't realize/understand that they were Wesen, a lot like Blutbad Holly Clark in Grimm Season 1 Episode 7. Holly, however, had a loving adoptive mother who welcomed her back at the end of the episode...
  • This episode featured less-than-subtle character names relating to Peter Pan: John, Peter, Miguel (Michael), (Tiger-)Lily, Hooke, Wendy. Compare this with Grimm Season 1 Episode 2, "Bears Will Be Bears," with the Goldilocks expy Golda.
  • Adalind encountered an old co-worker from her time at the law firm (see Grimm Season 1 Episode 3, "Beeware"), who suggested she return to work there.
  • Nick and Adalind share that they were each other's "first," back in Grimm Season 1 Episode 1: she was the first Wesen he saw woge, and he was the first Grimm she'd ever seen.

So, what did you think of "Lost Boys"? Did you feel sympathy for the unfortunate, confused Wesen children or freaked out by the number of locks of hair from previous "Mothers"? Did the episode feel "retro" to you? What about the message of family? Let us know in the comments below!

Grimm Season 5 Episode 4, "Maiden Quest" airs on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 9/8c on NBC. You can watch Grimm online to relive the fun until then!

Grimm Round Table: Frayed String and Family

What does it mean to be a family?

On Grimm Season 5 Episode 3, we saw many different types. Renard, stymied in his attempt to reunite with his young daughter; Nick and Adalind, awkwardly attempting to understand how to act with each other as they raise their newborn son' Monroe and Rosalee, very much in love and still pondering a future with children.

Then, of course, there was the group of Wesen children (the titular "Lost Boys") who kidnapped women to act as their mother... and ultimately killing them when they inevitably don't live up to their expectations.

Join TV Fanatic Round Table Panelists Doug Wolfe, Allison Nichols, Robin Harry, and Kathleen Wiedel as they discuss family, Rosalee's kidnapping, Trubel's reveal, and more on this week's Round Table discussion!

Grimm Round Table 1-27-15

Discuss the message of the meaning of family in this episode.

Doug: We are being schooled on how not to have a family. Don’t kidnap someone and try to make them your mother – and then kill them if it doesn’t work out. And, building on what Kathleen said in her Grimm Season 5 Episode 3 review: don’t expect the person you raped (and with whom you had a kid) to suddenly fall in love with you.

Allison: Love can't be forced. You can't read what family means in a magazine and expect it to happen with some person you kidnapped off the street. Kindness does not equal love.

Robin: A lot of people say that family is who you choose. I think this made it evident that the choice has to be mutual. You choose each other.

Kathleen: Family means different things to different people, whether it's the family that you are born into or the family that you choose. But one thing is pretty well universal: family is complicated.

What did you think of the Case of the Week?

Doug: It was lame, and served mostly as filler. The Wesen children were only dangerous to non-Wesen, so any tension pretty much fell flat when Rosalee woged in front of them. It felt like this story was strung together with the flimsiest of frayed string, just so they could have something to film.

Allison: I was disappointed. It really wasn't a case. I would have rather Rosalee being kidnapped be the case and to never have had Wendy involved. Rosalee did all the heavy lifting (which was great, don't get me wrong), but Nick and Hank did absolutely nothing.

Robin: I was okay with it, actually. The case helped with Team Grimm being able to find Rosalee, so there was enough integration to satisfy me. I loved how Rosalee carried this episode. Grimm has a fantastic supporting cast, so I quite enjoy seeing episodes every once in a while that aren't Nick-centric.

Kathleen: Sorry, Robin, I'm with Doug and Allison. It just fell completely flat for me. While not every episode can (or should!) be end-of-the-world scenarios, this one felt like someone had just slammed on the brakes in terms of the serialized, over-arching drama that's been playing out. It seemed almost like a script that had been recycled from Grimm Season 1!

What are your thoughts on Adalind's encounter with her former coworker, who suggested she go back to work for the law firm?

Doug: I’m hoping Adalind takes him up on his idea. She needs to have her own source of income and to not be so dependent on Nick. Also, she needs to find her own damned place and leave the man she abused alone.

Allison: I thought it was random, but I think it would be good for Adalind to get back to normal. She had a job she was apparently good at, and it wasn't tied to her being a Hexenbiest. It's something she can still do. I'm just not sure she would be okay with leaving Kelly, considering what happened to Diana.

Robin: Having a kid is expensive, and the extra income is a good idea. It would be nice to see people doing things on this show that aren't always Wesen-related. I assume there are also normal people in Portland?

Kathleen: Normal people? In Portland? Heh heh... Seriously, though, all three of you make good points. Though babysitting might become an issue. Maybe Bud and his wife would be up for it?

What did you think of the reveal that Trubel was the one in Meisner's cell?

Doug: I’m a little worried that they used that time to brainwash her. The next time Nick sees her, he won’t be seeing the Trubel who came to him so long ago.

Allison: I can't believe it freaking took this long for us to see where Trubel has been. It wasn't really shocking because that was the only place she could be.

Robin: Wasn't that a possibility we've been mulling over since day one? It wasn't all that surprising. Someone mentioned weeks ago that they think Trubel has been brainwashed, and I can see how this might be a possibility. That would be interesting; Trubel would be extremely dangerous if she's not practising restraint.

Kathleen: It's still possible that the writers are pulling a fast one on us, but I'm really just hoping they finally explain what in the world is going on with Meisner and Trubel.

Share something that stood out positively or negatively for you in this episode.

Doug: I really dig Nick’s new home! As the camera panned around the place (with Nick explaining everything) I couldn’t help thinking how cool that would be as a bachelor cave. You can do so much with it.

Allison: Jumping off of Doug's answer, I can't decide if Nick is being really smart or way too paranoid with his home. I think if he adds some actual furniture and makes it look more like a house, I'll be okay with it. Right now it looks like a safe house or a bunker. I did really love Adalind's reactions to her new home.

Robin: I'm not hating whatever's happening between Adalind and Nick as much as other folks are, mostly because I see it as Nick making a conscious decision to move past what she did to him in order to raise a son without conflict. I can't blame anyone who decides to put an innocent child's interests ahead of their own. That said, it is moving WAY too quickly. The whole sharing a bed thing was just way too much, too fast.

Kathleen: I really liked that Rosalee was proactive about rescuing herself from her kidnapping predicament, rather than waiting to be saved. One thing I've always loved about her is that she's no Damsel in Distress.

Bonus Question! Is Meisner trustworthy?

Doug: It’s too soon to tell. We don’t actually know his game plan yet. I’m waiting to see where he’s going, especially with Trubel.

Allison: I have no idea. We haven't really spent enough time with him to know or get a sense of the kind of person he is. Plus, he's involved in this even bigger mystery organization. We need some answers.

Robin: I agree with the others that it is too soon to tell. The Meisner we've known has always had an agenda that's aligned with Team Grimm's in some way, and I don't think we've been given information that necessarily changes things. I expect we'll know soon enough.

Kathleen: Meisner is as big a wildcard as there is on this show. At this point, it's practically impossible to tell what side he's on, what his game plan is, and whether he's telling the truth or not at any given time. As Allison said, we need some answers!

Be sure to tune in for Grimm Season 5 Episode 4, "Maiden Quest,"  which will air on November 20, 2015 at 9/8c on NBC!

Grimm Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Maiden Quest

$
0
0

After last week's extremely lackluster episode, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this week's installment. "Maiden Quest" featured the classic tale of vying for the hand of the fair maiden, turned right on its head in some pretty entertaining ways.

Grimm Season 5 Episode 4 featured not noble knights hunting a dragon but three guys attempting to win the daughter of a Wesen mob boss. And the man they were trying to kill to complete the quest, he was just an ordinary human.

So in this version, the monster hunted the man!

To make things even crazier, it turned out that the mob boss actually meant the whole thing as a test of his daughter's character and strength of will! (A test which she passed by actually killing two of the suitors and protesting any attempt to marry her off.)

Speaking of killing the suitors, did it strike anyone as a bit odd just how casually Nick and Hank gave Emily a pass? Admittedly, she was saving Frankie's life at the time, but she absolutely committed premeditated murder to do it!

Seems that she really is a good choice to follow in her father's mobster footsteps...

Did anyone else feel a little sorry for Luis, Frankie's bodyguard? The guy got curbstomped twice. I hope he's got good insurance, because that just hurt.

Frankie Adkins seemed the worst off by the end of the episode; having witnessed both Daniel Troyer and Emily woge in front of him, and nearly being murdered twice in apparently as many days, Frankie suffered a complete breakdown. When last seen, he was a weeping, sobbing mess on the floor.

It was a harsh reminder that not everyone can handle the reality of Wesen, something that was previously addressed after Wu witnessed the Aswang – which was actually referenced obliquely:

But, not having spent time in a mental institution, the M.E. does not have the insight that I now have.

Wu

The episode featured some really funny banter; Wu, in particular, was in fine form with his Grimm quotes.

Meanwhile, Nick and Adalind were continuing to bond. One thing I find frustrating about this is the fact that they do, in fact, have chemistry! If only they had realized this before Adalind had done so many horrible things, I wouldn't find this so troubling.

In some alternate reality, Adalind realized after Nick saved her from the Mellifer bee-folk in Grimm Season 1 Episode 3 that he was actually worth getting to know better and stopped trying to kill him. Maybe Nick had already followed his aunt's advice and broken up with Juliette.

Doesn't that sound like a potentially intriguing possibility? Alas, it will forever remain a "what could have happened." As it is, the whole thing just seems full of squick.

On a more curious note, I am really wondering what's behind that door in the tunnel under the factory. The secret back-door to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, perhaps? Or maybe a trove full of mystical artifacts dating to the Revolutionary War... (Oh, wait. That's Sleepy Hollow.)

Here are a few thoughts before I turn the discussion over to you:

  • Trubel is back in play, and did not look to be in good shape. How, I wonder, did she manage to find Nick and Adalind's hideout when it's supposed to be a big secret? Does Meisner know?
  • Captain Renard actually got a bit to do besides sit behind his desk looking concerned. Huzzah! Something tells me that he's probably wise to think hard before endorsing any mayoral candidate...
  • The only one of Emily's suitors to survive? He didn't even want her because he's gay! I think that maybe he and his family need to sit down and have a frank discussion.
  • Seeing Nick and Adalind trying desperately to soothe baby Kelly really makes me appreciate everything my parents must have gone through when my siblings and I were babies.
  • Rosalee received a letter from her unsavory past in Seattle. Anyone else get the sneaking suspicious that this particular tidbit isn't done yet?
  • There was a sad, touching moment when Adalind was telling Kelly about his big sister, Diana. Has anyone bothered to tell Adalind that Diana's actually safe? (Renard, I'm looking at you!)

So, fellow Grimmsters, what did you think of "Maiden Quest"? Were you surprised that Troyer had intended the Maiden Quest as a right of passage for his daughter, rather than a win-her-hand ritual? What do you think of Nick and Adalind's bonding? Let us know in the comments below!

Grimm Round Table 1-27-15

Were you surprised by the reveal that Emily had killed the suitors, and that the Quest was intended for her in the first place?

Doug: The writer pretty much telegraphed it to us that she was the killer: not one of them asked her if she wanted to be with them. Nor did her father. So I knew from the start she was the killer. I was surprised that her dad set that as a test for her, however.

Allison: I saw it coming from a mile away. It wasn't shocking at all. I did like the twist that the quest was about her and not about the guys. I didn't really care for this "case."

Robin: That wasn't surprising at all. I figured it was her right after the first attempt on Frankie's life. It was more surprising that the quest was for her, but seriously, he could have just asked her.

Kathleen: For me, it was a 50/50 chance that it was Emily versus, say, her father or one of the other suitors. The fact that she dealt with the suitors so ruthlessly showed that she was ready to take the reins of power from her father. Remember, she had to lay in wait for the suitors to show up and then she brutally murdered them! Clearly, she showed her mob-boss father that she was ready to move up in the criminal underworld. Yikes.

What are your thoughts on the meeting Captain Renard had with Andrew, the potential mayoral candidate?

Doug: My guess is that Renard is going to investigate Andrew and is going to find something ugly about him. They put him between a rock and a hard place. If he doesn’t support the mayor and the mayor gets elected anyway, they’re going to find a way to fire him. The guess here though is that they’ll try to find some darker means to get him on board, which may result in him showing THEM a little of his own power.

Allison: I thought it came out of nowhere. I'm honestly not sure what I think about that scene. I need to know more. Renard off on his own really isn't all that interesting to me.

Robin: My guess is that this mayoral candidate is part of the uprising, and is being positioned in a place of power in order to facilitate whatever the uprising is. Renard may (hopefully) be more useful this season than he's been so far, if he befriends said mayoral candidate and becomes Team Grimm's person on the inside.

Kathleen: Renard's a very ambitious man. Remember his dream and behavior while under the influence of the Coins of Zakynthos back in Grimm Season 1 Episode 13? He may be a bastard, but he's definitely a Royal. Like Doug, I suspect that Andrew might have bitten off more than he can chew...

What did you think of the scene when Rosalee got that letter from her less-than-savory past life in Seattle?

Doug: Though Monroe agreed with her suggestion to put her past behind, you just know it’s going to come back to bite her, right? That’s what that whole scene was about. It’s funny: no show ever brings up anything like that without there being great significance attached to it. If someone even coughs, it means they’ve got lung cancer. Predictable, and I have to say, a little boring.

Allison: I really didn't care. There wasn't enough background on who this guy was who was writing her. The best thing that came out of it was Monroe and Rosalee being adorable.

Robin: As with Renard and the politicians, this just kind of came out of nowhere. Like Doug said, surely this will prove to be significant later on, but as of right now, it's just something to keep in the back of your mind. Also, I just couldn't get over how poor the penmanship and the spelling were on that letter.

Kathleen: In a larger view, I liked that the writers are remembering their characters' backstories. Rosalee has always been an interesting one: at first glance, she seems so sweet and kind, even adorable, but it's moments like this we're reminded that she has a rather...unseemly past. I'm curious as to whether anything further will come of this letter.

Trubel's back, and looking somewhat the worse for wear. What do you think is going on with her?

Doug: I really have no idea. None. I’m just glad she’s back. Honestly, I was more interested in the progression of Nick and Adalind’s relationship. I mean, come on: she had no clothes, so Nick had to give her his shirt? How cliché is that?

Allison: No clue, but I'm so happy she's back. I'm curious how she found Nick, maybe the secret group knew where Nick's new home is. I'm also really enjoying Nick and Adalind's weird romance.

Robin: I figure Trubel is a pawn in some greater scheme, and they probably sent her back to set Nick up in some way. My question is how Trubel found Nick. I mean, Nick and Adalind JUST decided to move to the Fortress of Grimmitude without telling anyone where they were. How did a beat-up Trubel know to go there? I swear, if Nick didn't turn off the GPS on that phone...

Kathleen: "The Fortress of Grimmitude?" I love it! Anyway, Trubel didn't look that bad when we last saw her with Meisner at the end of the previous episode. Either he beat her up as a cover, or she's been tangling with someone else, perhaps an agent of the Occultatem Libera uprising.

Bonus Question! Where do you think that hidden tunnel under the paint factory home leads?

Doug: It’s going to be a Wesen thing, I’m sure of it. Whatever it is, I have the sense that Nick’s going to be using whatever’s in there when he fights in the upcoming war.

Allison: It would be really cool if it was some secret lair type thing. Nick still hasn't really found a good place to keep everything from the trailer. A secret lair only accessible via a secret passage would do the trick.

Robin: A Secret Underground Passage leading to a Tunnel Network!! I think it leads to some sort of headquarters for the uprising. Or a hidden Grimm library with a stash of Grimm weapons. Or a secret portal to other Grimms! The possibilities are endless, people!

Kathleen: Clearly, it leads to a nest of Gelumcaedus. Fortunately, they're fans of musical theater, so their raucous renditions of Les Miserables alert Nick before he can stumble into their hideaway. Being an intelligent sort of Grimm, he retreats and seals the door forever.

The next episode, Grimm Season 5 Episode 5, "Rat King," is scheduled to air on December 5, 2015 at 9/8c on NBC, after taking a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Grimm Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Rat King

Meisner is awesome. Can I say that again? Yes? Okay! Meisner is awesome! I just really like the guy when he shows up, and he doesn't disappoint in Grimm Season 5 Episode 5. And that fight scene? Can I watch that over?

What? There was a Rat King in this episode? I'm sorry, I didn't notice over the awesomeness that is Meisner.

Nick Comes to the Rescue - Grimm

The whole Rat King story felt like a distraction to the whole Trubel-returns story, though in actuality it was (at some level) a branch of the same tree. The Reinigen apparently only become the Rat King when they are collectively terrified, which in this instance was almost certainly a symptom of the brewing Occultatem Libera uprising.

Monroe won the award for Best Quote of the Night with this little gem:

Are you kidding me? A twenty-foot-tall rat-zilla that can't be stopped? I mean, where's a thing like that gonna hide?

Monroe

Monroe also earned points for his hilariously matter-of-fact reaction when the Rat King demonstrated its existence by literally rearing its ugly head.

There really wasn't any mystery at all to this case, even from an in-universe perspective. It was pretty obvious to everyone what had happened. Even the Rat King (rat-zilla?) was incapacitated fairly quickly. It was as if the writers themselves were impatient to get back to the important part of the episode.

Which is, of course, Meisner. I mean Trubel.

I knew if I could just get to you it would be okay...

Trubel

That quote took on almost tragic proportions by the end of the episode, naturally. If you have a phobia of hospitals, I would imagine this episode would not do anything nice to your peace of mind, given what happened with the doctor and nurses treating Trubel. And by "treating," I mean "kidnapping."

I seriously doubt that they had any clue that Nick was also a Grimm, else they would not have been so blase about what was going on. It really wasn't clear what they thought of Nick, given that he specifically identified Trubel as an undercover police officer.

Trubel herself didn't have much to do, being incapacitated as she was; she seemed little more than a MacGuffin in this episode, but she did bring a good deal of mystery with her reappearance. Where had she been? What had she been doing? Who attacked her?

The answer to that last question is almost certainly the Occultatem Libera clowns. This also firmly answered what side of the fight Meisner is on.

Nurse Christy Kane: [defiantly] Occultatem Libera!
Meisner: You know, I'm getting a little sick of hearing that.

Wasn't that fight scene just great? Meisner and Nick, fighting back-to-back to save Trubel. All this just made me like Meisner more. Is it just me, or is Meisner the Hero of Another Story?

Meisner's role here is incredibly curious, given what we already know about him. He is a member of (or at least affiliated with) the Resistance against the Royals, yet he is clearly opposed to the Occultatem Libera Wesen uprising. Hopefully, he will explain just what is going on in the next episode.

He got a bit lucky that Adalind answered the phone and was so willing to vouch for him with Nick. (That initial phone call was pretty funny: "...Adalind?" "Meisner?!" *click*) And their interaction when he showed up in person was just a reminder of how much I liked them as a pair.

Hopefully, someone will remember to mention Meisner to Captain Renard, who has his own complicated relationship with him...

Speaking of Renard, he was being courted by that mayoral candidate again. This time, Andrew tempted him with an offer of running the police department as chief! Renard continued to play hard-to-get, possibly because he knew that there's got to be something incredibly hinky with this guy.

I hope this actually amounts to something at some point, because otherwise it's just a little weird, and definitely distracting. Please, Grimm writers, find something interesting for Sasha Roiz to do besides sit behind his desk at the precinct!

A few assorted thoughts before I turn the discussion over to you, my fellow Grimmsters:

  • Nick's super-hearing made an appearance when Team Grimm went to the junkyard to search for Johnny and Selina.
  • Selina, a cat-like Klaustreich, shares her given name with DC's Selina Kyle... better known as Catwoman.
  • Meisner found Nick and Adalind's cozy little hideaway by tracking the GPS on Trubel's motorcycle, but it wasn't revealed how Trubel found them in the first place.
  • Reinigen first appeared in Grimm Season 1 Episode 5, "Danse Macabre," which was based on the Pied Piper legend. Monroe described them as being on the bottom of the Wesen food chain.
  • Klaustreichs first appeared in Grimm Season 1 Episode 16, "The Thing With Feathers." They're known as the big jerks of the Wesen community.

So, what did you think of "The Rat King"? Were you glad to have Trubel back? Were you disappointed that she spent most of the episode unconscious? And what about the Rat King? Let us know in the comments section below!

The final episode of 2015, Grimm Season 5 Episode 6, "Wesen Nacht," is scheduled to air on Friday, December 11, 2015 at 9/8c on NBC. If you missed the awesomeness that is Meisner in this episode, you can watch Grimm online to catch up!

NBC At Midseason: What Will Get Renewed?

NBC has already handed out renewals to four dramas.

Premature? A little, but the renewed shows have been very reliable performers so far this season.

One of them is the biggest new freshman hit and the other three are veteran dramas that we knew would be renewed anyway.

It's far too early to judge Superstore and Telenovela. They have aired once and not even in their regular slot.

How does the rest of the line-up stack up?

1. Blindspot

Blindspot
The show is currently NBC's number 1 drama. Season 1 is averaging a 2.33 rating and 8.34 million viewers. Over on the DVR, the show is adding on over 80%. Season 2 has already been announced, so rest assured, Blindspot will be on the air for at least another year.

2. Chicago Med

Chicago med
The third show in the Chicago trifecta has been posting very solid ratings. Season 1 is averaging a 2.02 rating and 8.93 million viewers. Over on the DVR, the show is adding over 50%. A definite renewal. Will NBC add a fourth show to this successful franchise?

3. Chicago Fire

Chicago fire
Season 4 is up 8% to a 1.86 rating and 8.01 million viewers. 60% are watching within 7 days and the show is already renewed for Season 5.

4. Law & Order: SVU

Law and order svu
Season 17 is performing very well for the network. Current averages are a 1.64 rating and 7.04 million viewers. The show is adding over 80% in the DVR ratings. The only thing that will end this show is if it becomes too expensive.

5. The Blacklist

The blacklist
The ratings are down 37% this year to a 1.49 rating and 6.94 million viewers. The show adds 65% on with the DVR and is already renewed.

6. Chicago PD

Chicago pd
Season 3 is down just 5% to a 1.49 rating and 6.44 million. The show adds on over 50% within a week and is already renewed. Should NBC be renamed Nothing But Chicago?

Grimm Season 5 Episode 6 Review: Wesen Nacht

$

Um, yeah, so, that happened. I confess, I did not see that one coming. And by "that one" I mean the sudden apparent resurrection of Juliette. Wow.

Grimm Season 5 Episode 6 was quite a strong entry, especially as a lead-in to the winter break. It featured the first public signs of the Occultatem Libera Wesen uprising with a night of vandalism targeting Wesen shops, with one storekeep murdered and another kidnapped.

The great thing was that the Case of the Week actually directly dealt with the long-term story arc, so there was no feeling of disconnect, as happened with Grimm Season 5 Episode 5.

The title of the episode, "Wesen Nacht," is almost certainly a reference to Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, which was a notorious coordinated attack on Jewish-owned businesses throughout the Germany on the night of November 9, 1938.

Even the black shirt "uniforms" of the Occultatem Libera seem designed to evoke the Brown Shirts (Stumabteilung), who were the Nazi paramilitary group responsible for Kristallnacht. Just this side of heavy-handed, to the point that I was snickering when Nick and Hank confronted Billie with the black shirt.

Nick: We found this black shirt in your residence!
Billie: Uh... yeah? What does that prove, anyway?
Hank: ...ya know, she's got a point, Nick.
Nick: But it's a black shirt!
Hank: Dude, everyone's got a black shirt. You've got a black shirt!
Nick: Drat. I guess we'll have to let her go.
Billie: But wait! I need to lead you to our Evil Lair (TM)!

Okay, fine. The confrontation actually went completely differently:

Nick: I know you're Wesen, and I know your friends are Wesen.
Billie: So I guess you're Wesen, too, right? You think that makes us family?
Hank: No.
Billie: Well, I don't either. You're a cop!
Hank: I'm a cop. [points a Nick] *He's* a Grimm.

Given that the whole thing was a setup, I wonder if, at any point, Billie realized just how much trouble she was actually in with this group. Maybe she was just feeling over-confident with their strength in numbers?

For the viewers, the fact that it was a trap became totally obvious as soon as Xavier didn't tell Nick the kidnappers were targeting Monroe (presumably because they saw Monroe as a threat, though why haven't they targeted Renard?).

Still, wasn't it awesome when Rosalee figured it out and totally smacked him (twice!), then did the smart thing and called Monroe? It's sometimes altogether too easy to forget that foxes are predators, too, and Rosalee has an iron fist of doom hidden in a velvet glove.

This leads us to the return of Bitsie Tulloch. I have to hand it to the cast and crew, though: in the age of Twitter and all that, they managed really, really well to keep that a secret! So, kudos to them on that count.

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't satisfied with the way Juliette's story line turned out during Grimm Season 4, but this development came as a huge surprise for me. Did Hadrian's Wall (yay, finally a name for them!) fake her death?

Something worth noting is that Trubel revealed to Adalind that she went back to Nick's house specifically for Juliette. Given Trubel's affection for Juliette, it doesn't seem all that outlandish that she would fake kill her over really killing her, especially if Hadrian's Wall had a way to mentally stabilize Juliette.

I do offer a note of caution, however, that the writers better be careful about making death cheap. While comic books are notorious for characters never being truly dead, that sort of thing tends to annoy television audiences (except for soap operas, I guess). When death becomes cheap, the stakes tend to feel a little meaningless.

I hope that Bitsie Tulloch and the Grimm team pull off an interesting twist here, rather than leaving us utterly disappointed, as they did with her Hexenbiest-ification leading to her one-note villain deterioration last season.

There weren't an overabundance of memorable Grimm quotes, but there were a few, like this amusing exchange as Team Grimm was barricaded in the factory while the Occultatem Libera was trying to kill them:

Nick: I though Xavier was your friend!
Monroe: He was!
Renard: They got to him.
Wu: Well, now they're getting to *us*!

Really, it was the look on Wu's face that sold it.

A few final thoughts before I turn the discussion over to you:

  • Renard actually decided to give his endorsement to Andrew the Mayoral Candidate. I am about 99.98% certain this will come back to bite him somehow in a future episode.
  • Also, apparently Renard's been in law enforcement for 20 years. This little tidbit is a reminder that we really don't know a whole lot about his past, beyond the fact that he and his mother had to flee Europe.
  • Hey, more Renard! When he woged to threaten Billie, he went full woge, because it startled the stuffing out of Wu, too. Billie better hope that Juliette slaughtered her with everyone else, because Renard does not like being played...
  • Dallas Cruz: Occultatem Libera supreme ubermensch...killed in his first appearance. Yep. The only way he would've been owned faster is if Meisner showed up, too.
  • Trubel asked Adalind about the complicated status of Adalind's relationship with Nick. Well, they're not sleeping together, just next to each other. Trubel's deadpan response? "Uh-huh."
  • Hadrian's Wall marked the northern limit of the Roman Empire in Britain, essentially defending the "civilized" Empire from the "barbarians" to the north. (Parts of it still stand today and are tourist attractions.)

So, what did you think? Did you find the episode exciting? What do you think Rosalee's going to do with Xavier? Were you surprised to see Juliette again? Let us know in the comments section below!

That's all for 2015, folks! If you missed this episode or just want to relive the Wesen shenanigans, be sure to watch Grimm online! Grimm returns with Season 5 Episode 7 on January 22, 2016. Catch y'all then!

Year in Review: 15 Characters Who Deserve More Screen Time

$
0

As we continue our year in review, we're looking at characters who could have made good work of more juicy stories.

They were underutilized, some of them mere backgrounds when they are, in fact, leads. Try to find good photos of them in their current season and you'll see what we mean.

Others are just so good we think they should be featured a lot more often.

Take a look a the list now!

1. Alex Karev - Grey's Anatomy

Alex karev greys anatomy
Alex Karev from Grey's Anatomy. He's one of the best characters and one of the few originals remaining, yet he does not get the screen time he deserves. Grey's keeps bringing in unnecessary new characters instead of featuring the great ones they already have. Alex should be saving babies while providing advice and sarcastic comments on a regular basis. Instead, he's pushed to the sidelines more often than not.

2. Castiel - Supernatural

Castiel supernatural
Castiel on Supernatural. It feels like there are obvious storylines that Cas can have, especially with God and the Darkness being such a huge focus in Season 11, and yet they've sidelined their resident heavenly being to bingeing on various Netflix shows or being absent altogether. It's really been disheartening because Castiel has so much potential as a character and has played such a vital role in the past on Supernatural. We'd almost rather they just ditch him altogether than to continue watching him fade into oblivion or get jerked around with bad side plots.

3. Angela - Bones

Angela bones
Angela on Bones. It seems that Angela used to be a more integral part of the story and of Brennan's life than she has been lately. She's such an interesting character, and we'd like to see her do more than analyze images on a special computer.

4. Betsy Ross

Betsy ross
Betsy Ross on Sleepy Hollow. When we first saw Nikki Reed listed in the credits as a main character we thought Ichabod would be championing another hero from our past as she tries to survive in the 21st century. Sadly, Betsy Ross is only seen in flashbacks and many episodes seem to use the SAME flashback scene, thwarting any idea of seeing her character develop.

5. Matt Donovan - The Vampire Diaries

Matt donovan the vampire diaries
As always, Matt Donovan. The guy is literally the last remaining human in Mystic Falls, and he STILL can’t catch a decent storyline. He DID get a new job, however, but with no one to patrol/police, what good is being a cop? As much as we love Zach Roerig’s beautiful blue eyes, Matt should’ve headed west and joined Jeremy and Tyler on their vampire hunting expeditions.

6. Peyton - iZombie

Peyton izombie
Peyton on iZombie. The show clearly has so many ideas for what they want to do with her. They keep introducing new intriguing plot points for her. Plus she has amazing chemistry with basically everyone – and then she disappears for episodes at a time! She needs to be brought on as a series regular; this recurring status is just not cutting it.

Year End Review: 13 Ferocious Fights from 2015

$

Despite the abundance of comic book related shows, not all of our fights for our year in review come from them.

You think you might be able to guess what our crew chose as some of the best?

Well, wait no longer, Take a look and then weigh in with your thoughts on the greatest fights televsion had to offer this year.

And keep coming back because our lists will continue as the year winds down.

1. Peggy vs Dottie - Agent Carter

Peggy vs dottie agent carter
Peggy versus Dottie in Agent Carter Season 1 Episode 8 was as intense as it gets. It had it all including knives, strangulation, and a baseball bat. It culminated in Peggy throwing Dotty through a glass window. What more could we want?

2. Daredevil Fight Scenes

Daredevil fight scenes
Every fight scene on Daredevil. The choreography of every fight is flawless. I almost never find myself on the literal edge of my seat watching fight scenes on shows, but Daredevil? Every time. Fights are made even more incredible with the added camera nods to the things that Matt Murdock CAN'T see and the way we, the viewers, get to be a part of how he acknowledges their existence, whether it be a chain jingling or shoes scraping, or any of the things that capture his other senses. Every fight is breathtaking to watch.

3. Daisy/Skye on Agents of SHIELD

Daisy slash skye on agents of shield
Goes to Daisy/Skye on Agents of SHIELD episode "The Dirty Half Dozen" at the end of season 2 in April. She had a full 36 second continuous fight scene with no cuts that showed exactly how bad-ass she had become since season one. You wonder how many times Chloe Bennet had to practice that entire scene to get it right in one take!

4. Norma and Romero - Bates Motel

Norma and romero bates motel
Norma Bates and Sheriff Romero in Season 3 Episode 10: “Crazy”. With Norma furious about a flash drive and Romero in need of the truth, the two end up in a frenzied and physical altercation. It was a violent, passionate, and breathtaking scene culminating in one of the most intense SQUEE moments that never happened. Two damaged people both with secrets spiraling out of control, both tired of running from their inner demons, and both repelled by, yet attracted to each other. They could have easily succumbed to the moment, but instead, rejected their feelings, gathered up their control, and continued on their way – a brilliant display of denial that each has perfected in their own way over the course of three seasons.

5. Supergirl Fight Scenes

Supergirl fight scenes
I like any fight with Supergirl. But my favorite was with Livewire, probably more because of the story behind it her and not the fight itself. I really liked Livewire as a villain for Supergirl.

6. Cookie vs Anika - Empire

Cookie vs anika empire
Cookie vs. Anika on Empire. It was the fight we were all waiting for, and boy was it worth it. Further proof of Taraji P. Henson's rock-star status.

Grimm Round Table: Dirty Work

$

0

Nick finally got some of the answers he's been waiting for in Grimm Season 5 Episode 6, as the Wesen Uprising started making its first big moves with coordinated attacks on Wesen shops, with one shopkeeper killed and another kidnapped.

Of course, the biggest shocker came at the very end of the episode, when Team Grimm was saved by the surprise return of not-as-dead-as-previously-suspected Juliette!

Join TV Fanatic Round Table Panelists Doug Wolfe, Allison Nichols, Robin Harry, and Kathleen Wiedel as they discuss Hadrian's Wall, Trubel doing their dirty work, what's next for the Wesen Uprising, and, of course, the big one, the return of Juliette!

Be sure to add your own thoughts and remarks in the comments section below!

Grimm Round Table 1-27-15

What's your takeaway from what we learned about Meisner and Chavez's organization, Hadrian's Wall (HW)?

Doug: I still feel like there’s a lot of darkness around it. For example: why did they put Trubel (and now we know they did the same with Juliette) into those dark rooms? How were they conditioning them for the war? And what strange powers are at work that allows them to be such amazing warriors in the fight?

Allison: While it was nice to learn something about them, I agree with Doug. There are so many questions. How did they get started, and how did they convince so many Grimms to work with them? We know they are a part of the government that no one knows about, so are we talking like Division from Nikita or is HW truly doing good without any evil agendas. They clearly have a lot of resources and not a lot of oversight, so are they operating on the up and up?

Robin: Well, I've gotten that they're a secret international multi-governmental organization designed to quell the uprising of crazy homicidal Wesen all over the world. They're well resourced, given Trubel's bike and travels. We were only just introduced to them, so there's clearly a lot more to learn, but my biggest question is how Meisner ended up with them.

Are they tied to the Resistance somehow? Or is that sidearc all done now that the King is dead? My problem with Grimm is that they're really quick to introduce new mythologies, but horrible with developing and resolving ones they already have going on, so I'm not even sure we'll learn as much about Hadrian's Wall as we should.

Kathleen: I agree 100% with Doug. Hadrian's Wall gives me the creeps. Trubel is especially troubling (if you'll pardon the pun): this is a young woman with some serious trust issues, yet she has displayed very little reticence about working for an organization that kidnapped her, twice. Don't get me started on Juliette and her weird brainwashed behavior at the end of Grimm Season 5 Episode 6.

Even Meisner's behavior since he was connected with them has seemed at odds with his previous characterization. For instance, Meisner was a member of the Resistance against the rule of the Royals, and now he's a member of a group opposing a rebellion against the current order?

So, Hadrian's Wall has apparently been sending Trubel around the world doing Grimm dirty work opposing Occultatem Libera. Thoughts?

Doug: I think we’re just now starting to get a better idea of the scope of the war Hadrian Wall’s waging in defence against Occultatem Libera: the fact that it’s multi-national, for example. After seeing the results of Juliet’s action against the team who trapped Nick and the gang, I’m beginning to think people like Trubel (and now Juliette) have been conditioned to be one-woman armies.

Allison: Ever since the pilot, we've been told that Nick isn't like other Grimms. Normally, Grimms are ruthless in their attack on Wesen. Whenever Nick first meets any Wesen, they are afraid, even if they are harmless like Bud. The HW is just giving Grimms targets that they know are bad news, and the Grimms are doing what they do best. HW is playing things smart, you gotta give them that. You need a Grimm or two on your side if you are going to fight a Wesen uprising.

Robin: I don't know if I would call it "dirty work" yet. While superficially we can say Hadrian's Wall good, Occultatem Libera bad, I don't think we know enough about either group to come to accurate conclusions about their agendas. I do think that it's incredibly cool that Trubel has been traveling the world and meeting other Grimms, especially since she just realized she wasn't the only one so recently. I'd love to see more Grimms!

Kathleen: I agree with Robin on most counts, especially questioning whether we can even consider Hadrian's Wall to be good guys. While the Uprising cannot possibly lead to good things, HW has been dispatching Trubel all over the world with a heavy implication that she's been doing wetwork. Because that is what Grimms are "for" in the Wesen world. Compare this to what Nick has been trying to do in Portland, and draw your own conclusions...

Renard warned Nick that he better hope the FBI doesn't find out what happened with Chavez. Do you think this will play into future episodes?

Doug: Of that there is no doubt. Writers rarely write scenes like this into the script without having an ulterior motive. My guess is that the FBI will hamstring Nick at some point, probably when the rest of his gang needs him the most.

Allison: Definitely. The FBI will figure out something, somehow. I'm interested to see how Nick gets out of it.

Robin: It's hard to tell with this show. Like I mentioned earlier, Grimm's follow-through with their ongoing story arcs isn't always the greatest. So while I think they'll revisit it, I'm not quite convinced that the FBI angle will have much to do with the rest of the season.

Kathleen: As much as it pains me to say, I agree with Robin. It may well be that they make all these heavy foreshadowing predictions and nothing ever comes from them. Not that I want Nick to get arrested by the FBI or anything (which would just be a rehash of earlier stories), but focus has also been something of a problem, particularly this season.

What do you think Occultatem Libera will do next?

Doug: They made a point of only attacking at midnight… and of making sure they attacked around the world at the same time. So my guess is that they will coordinate another world-wide event next. This time they mostly concentrated on damaging the shops belonging to Wesen – with casualties only there as a kind of afterthought. My guess is that the next event will involve them physically targeting Wesen, in terms of personal injury and death.

Allison: They wanted Monroe. I'm not sure if they wanted Monroe himself or they wanted him because he was close to Nick, a Grimm. I hope Occultatem Libera will continue their hunt for either Monroe or Nick because then we will get some answers.

Robin: I can't figure out their agenda, but I'm guessing they're going to escalate. It'll be interesting to find out why they're targeting the people that they are, or how this became an international conflict.

Kathleen: Going to an international scale with the Team Grimm as a whole might be an interesting direction, though they'd pretty much have to give up on the Case of the Week portion of the series, which so far they have been less willing to do. I suspect the Uprising will target the Wesen Council, which stands as a major representation of the old order, tradition, and The Way Things Are. Taking out the Council would be a bold move and put their opposition into disarray, as well.

Monroe's in Danger - Grimm

Juliette's back! What do you think of this new development? Yea or nay?

Doug: I shouted at my TV set when we finally saw her face at the end. I KNEW it was her! And I hate that she’s back. I’ve disliked her from the beginning, and I grew to hate her because of her actions and contempt for Nick. My hope is that the writers do not give her anything in terms of romance with Nick, and that she becomes purely a warrior and nothing more.

Allison: I'm definitely intrigued, and I am even more intrigued after reading an interview with Bitsie Tulloch. I'm definitely excited, and I hope this leads to some exciting storylines.

Robin: Meh, I saw this coming. I can't say that this is my favourite development on Grimm, but I am intrigued by the concept of HW having a super-Wesen on their side. That said, I really have no emotional investment in Juliette and I never did with her and Nick as a couple, so the farther we stay away from that, the happier I'll be.

Kathleen: I'm in the "not so thrilled about this development" camp. They already squandered a huge character growth opportunity with Juliette during the back half of Grimm Season 4, and they'll have to seriously impress me with what they have in store in order to win me over on this one.

*Bonus: Share you favorite (or least favorite!) scene or quote.

Doug: I liked the touching moment between Trubel and Nick when they were checking out her ultra-cool motorcycle. Though Trubel habitually keeps her emotions in check, that one moment where she broke down and hugged him was so great to see.

Allison: Oh goodness, there were so many good ones. I'm turn between picking Rosalee kicking Xavier's ass or Trubel asking how Adalind felt about Nick. Both were laugh out loud moments, and I loved them.

Robin: I enjoyed Nick and Hank's interrogation of the Occultatem Libera woman in the precinct. Nick's Grimm instincts are always fascinating to me, and I love those encounters when he meets a scary Wesen and doesn't even flinch. He's always more fun when he's intimidating.

Kathleen: You guys have already come up with some good ones, so I'll just mention the end fight, along with this gem:

Nick: I though Xavier was your friend!
Monroe: He was!
Renard: They got to him.
Wu: Well, now they're getting to *us*!

Year in Review: 12 Characters Who Wasted Our Time in 2015

What happens when a character gets on our nerves?

It feels like they're just chewing up the scenery in all the best shots and taking away from time that could be well spent with the characters we DO love, that's what happens.

The 12 characters listed below have the distinction of wasting our time in 2015.

Agree or disagree? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

1. Patty Spivot - The Flash

Patty spivot the flash
Patty from The Flash. We really, really want to like her but just can't get on board. Her and Barry seem really forced and we are just not feeling it.

2. Ashildr/Me - Doctor Who

Ashildr slash me doctor who
Ashildr/Me from Doctor Who quickly devolved into an unlikable karma Houdini. Is her story tragic? Surely, but no more so than many others, so her attitude, behavior, and treatment of other characters grate on the nerves in short order. And now she has a TARDIS, too. Really?

3. Sally Langston - Scandal

Sally langston scandal
Sally Langston on Scandal. Thankfully she’s been relegated to a far right wing talking head but even with only a scene or two a week she’s difficult to watch as she almost literally chews on the scenery with every word. She may serve as a counterpoint to the President’s agenda but each time she hits the screen we roll our eyes so hard it almost hurts.

4. Jerry Tyson - Castle

Jerry tyson castle
Jerry Tyson (3XK) on Castle. The diabolical serial killer first turned up in Castle Season 3 when he set up his former cellmate to take the fall for his killings, until Rick figured out the truth. Ruining 3XK’s plans put Castle on his hit list. Tyson re-emerged in Castle Season 5 when he tried to set Rick up for a horrific murder.

Later, with the help of his psychotic partner in crime Dr. Kelly Nieman, Tyson made his latest victims look like people Castle cared about. It took until the epic Castle Season 7 two-parter for Rick Castle (with the help of Ryan and Esposito’s sniper training) to take Jerry Tyson down for good as Kate Beckett ended Dr. Nieman. It was time for this villain to come to an end, but that doesn’t mean Castle fans won’t miss the smart and scary cat and mouse game he played with our heroes.

5. Howard Lyman - The Good Wife

Howard lyman the good wife
Howard Lyman on The Good Wife. Howard is a partner in a law firm where he frequently lounges around in his underwear. What began as a joke of a character has just turned cringe worthy. Howard makes sexist comments about all of the women and racist comments about anyone who doesn’t look like him.

Partner or no, he should have been forced out long ago, but instead even Diane make excuses for him to stay. It’s become difficult to watch but given that Howard just got engaged to Jackie, we’ll probably be seeing more of him instead of less.

6. Heretics Nora and Mary Louse - The Vampire Diaries

Heretics nora and mary louse the vampire diaries
Mary Louise and Nora on The Vampire Diaries. I really WANT to care about their story, because I think it's quite unique...but they just spend so much time whining and fighting that I just can't. I feel like the time wasted on them could be spent on Bonnie, Matt, Alaric, or any other established character, really. There are so many plots going on right now that theirs, unfortunately, just needs to go.

We love when a TV series gets all twisty, but only if it's done right.

To that end, we've picked some really awesome plot lines from 2015 that kind of left us reeling.

Did we see the writing on the wall for these stories coming? No, no we did not, and we loved the shows all the more for delivering.

If you're looking for the not so elegant plot twists...they're coming soon. For now...

Check out our staff picks for Best Plot Twists of the Year!

1. The Vampire Diaries - Caroline is Pregnant with Alaric's Babies!

The vampire diaries caroline is pregnant with alarics babies
Caroline discovers she's pregnant on The Vampire Diaries – with Alaric's twins! They had to work in Candice King's real life pregnancy, and there just so happened to be a couple of twins left behind in Jo's womb when she was killed at her own wedding. Months later it was discovered Caroline had them all along but they were masked by way of yet another spell. Oh the spells! Pretty cool, actually.

2. Wayward Pines - Hello, It's 4028!

Wayward pines hello its 2408
Wayward Pines Season 1 Episode 5 revealed that it is actually the year 4028 and civilization has died out. Life as these characters knew it no longer existed and the only thing that waited for them beyond the town walls were mutated versions of people who would kill them if they left. Only the children were allowed to know the truth, because the adults couldn't handle it. Definitely did not see that coming.

3. Supernatural - Um...That Wasn't God, Sam

Supernatural umthat wasnt god sam
On Supernatural, Sam was seeing visions of Lucifers cage in Hell. Sam thought it was God giving him clues on how to defeat the Darkness. With Crowely and Rowena's help, Sam goes to talk to Lucifer to ask him about the Darkness. During the chat, Sam is suddenly zapped into Lucifers Cage and Lucifer tells Sam that the visions were coming from him! God was never helping Sam and now Lucifer wants to use Sam as his vessel again.

4. Dark Matter - Six's Betrayal

Dark matter sixs betrayal
Six's betrayal on Dark Matter. Up until the Season 1 finale, Six had always seemed like a good guy, probably the nicest member of the crew. So no one saw it coming when he revealed himself to be the traitor and turned them over to the Galactic Authority. But is there some deeper plan in play? It's an intriguing turn of events that makes you wish Season 2 would come sooner.

5. Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce - Let's Stay Married and Try Again!

Girlfriends guide to divorce lets stay married and try again
Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce Season 1 led us to believe Abby and Jake were heading to divorce, but their chemistry was burning to bright it was really hard not to wonder if they might have missed something when they made their decision. Still, they plowed through, fully entrenched in their lives without each other. Until Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce Season 1 Episode 13 when they got together to sign the divorce papers. It didn't happen. The considered Jake and Abby 2.0 and that's exactly where we are now in Season 2. Heck of a twist for a show about divorce!

6. The Affair - Three out of Four Characters At the Murder Scene!

The affair three out of four characters at the murder scene
The Affair Season 2 threw at us Scotty's killer in the finale, and after two seaons of trying to plot who did it, the real culprit was a complete surprise. However, the real twist was that three of the main characters were on the scene at the time, causing us to go back and rethink so much of what has happened. Who is protecting who and why are suddenly much larger questions with deeper meaning.

11 Plots that Twisted Too Far in 2015

Remember all those plot twists that rocked our world in 2015?

These took the concept and went a bit too far, just annoying the heck out of us. We really don't think that was their intention.

Right? Surely when on paper, these twists must have looked great. From deaths to break ups to character returns, they should have just left well enough alone.

1. Grey's Anatomy - Penny's Arrival

Greys anatomy pennys arrival
The arrival of Penny on Grey's Anatomy. Everything was going so well, and the show was so enjoyable to watch. Then, surprise! Callie's new girlfriend is the doctor who couldn't save Derek's life. Even worse, it turned out she was transferring her residency to Grey Sloan Memorial, which basically made no sense.

2. Grimm - Juliette is Back as Eve

Grimm juliette is back as eve
Juliette's back on Grimm. After squandering a huge character development opportunity during Grimm Season 4, the creators apparently killed the bland-girlfriend-turned-one-note-villain in the season finale. Except now Juliette's back again. Surprise! While not everyone was thrilled with her death, her abrupt reappearance came completely out of left field. About the best things that can be said is that (1) everyone did a remarkable job keeping her return a secret, and (2) they may, may, just find a way to redeem themselves for the way her character was treated during Season 4.

3. The Vampire Diaries - Lily Leaving Us with Julian

The vampire diaries lily leaving us with julian
Lily stabbing herself on The Vampire Diaries and leaving JULIAN to continue annoying us. She was such a good character and we thought she was in it for the long haul. Now the Heretics are just going to be annoying without her and with JULIAN in charge. Just ugh!

4. The Big Bang Theory - Leonard Reveals his Cheating

The big bang theory leonard reveals his cheating
On The Big Bang Theory Leonard revealing to Penny that he cheated on her on his north pole expedition as they were on their way to get married was annoying. These two had been through enough and we did not need another conflict threatening their relationship. Plus it was completely out of character for Leonard to have kept that secret for so long.

5. Reign - Francis Survives to Die for Good

Reign francis survives to die for good
Francis was cured of his medical illness, at least temporarily, to live another day only to die mortally in battle. While most of the story was fiction anyway, it seemed a cheap shot to pull the he lives, he dies stunt with the guy who had become the heart of Reign.

6. Scream Queens - Hester is the Mastermind

Scream queens hester is the mastermind
The reveal that Hester was the killer all along on Scream Queens and just about every single thing that followed it. Creepy Hester was such an obvious choice of villain and it was massively disappointing that the show went the route of "So obvious, it's right under your nose!" for the big twist.

17 Characters Who Should Have Stayed Dead

There's a whole grieving process when a much-loved character is killed off in your favorite show.

You get so attached to characters that when it's time for them to go, you want them to stay on the show forever.

It's difficult enough to say goodbye to characters, but when they're brought back into the land of the living in a convoluted way, you'd much prefer if they stayed dead.

Why mess with the integrity of the show?

We've compiled a list of characters who should have stayed dead.

1. Peter - Teen Wolf

Peter hale teen wolf
Peter wasn’t a good character to begin with. He was just too evil to like, so his random return and the fact that we were being forced to like him, was just plain stupid. He should never have returned.

2. Alison - Pretty Little Liars

Alison dilaurentis pretty little liars
Pretty Little Liars was way more interesting when we all thought Alison was dead. I have no problem with Sasha Pieterse, but she was way better in flashback, being a bitch to her friends. This whole storyline with her as a teacher is so random and stupid.

3. Tony - 24

Tony almeida 24
24 was never a show that was scared to kill off regular characters, but when Season 7 came around, the presumed dead Tony Almeida showed up and it kind of ruined the whole idea of death in the show.

4. Madison - American Horror Story: Coven

Madison montgomery american horror story coven
Emma Roberts can effortlessly play a bitch and it totally sucked when she was killed off in Coven. It was annoying that just as we finished grieving her loss, she was back in the land of the living.

5. Rumple - Once Upon A Time

Rumple once upon a time
Rumple has been a villain for so long that he is no longer redeemable and I could care less about him. Pan killed him at the close of Season 3A, but he didn't stay dead. Yawn. Add in that it’s paved the way for him to become the dark one once more and you have the most pointless return.

6. Mama Pope - Scandal

Mama pope scandal
Scandal has been known to keep viewers on the edge of their seat, but the twist that Mama Pope was alive and the subsequent convoluted storylines left a lot to be desired. It all started with her. She was the reason the show started to go stale.

Grimm Season 5 Episode 7 Review: Eve of Destruction

Juliette is dead. Long live Eve.

The Hexenbiest that was once Nick Burkhardt's girlfriend has been hammered into a nearly emotionless killing machine by Hadrian's Wall to combat Black Claw. And that was just one of the wacky fun things that happened in Grimm Season 5 Episode 7.

Quest For the Truth - Grimm

I'm not sure what I think of this particular plot twist, to be honest. I definitely wasn't a fan of the way Juliette's character was treated in the back half of Grimm Season 4, with her becoming a one-note villain who seemed out to get Nick just because.

Now, I suppose, her actions have purpose, like taking down a Black Claw organizer and letting Nick show off his knife-throwing skills. I think I'm going to let this storyline play out a bit more before I form a more solid judgment on it.

I'm still not thrilled with the development of the Nick/Adalind relationship, but the writers obviously aren't consulting me when they're coming up with this sort of stuff. But it seems to me that either Nick has suffered serious brain damage somewhere along the way or he's got a level of forgiveness worthy of a saint.

Nick: I had a chance for a normal life with Juliette. And you gave that to me when you stopped me from being a Grimm.
Adalind: That wasn't exactly my intention at the time.

Don't get me wrong, there's definite chemistry between the two actors there. And Adalind, to her credit, did admit regret for her actions. So, however much I feel there's way too much squick there, I'm just going to go with the flow for now.

One other huge development in this episode: the Wesen Council is no more. An infiltrator blasted them all, except for Alexander, who was quick enough on his feet to get away and deliver the news to Rosalee. Yikes. I wonder if he will make his way to Portland?

In any case, killing the Wesen Council sure seems like a good way to cause chaos among the Wesen at large. This was a bold move and sure to upset the status quo more than a little. Are the Royal Families next?

We also met Lucien, a Black Claw leader, played by Bailey Chase. That speech he gave at the funeral pyre felt strangely flat, almost reminiscent of Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I know that it's not that Bailey Chase is a bad actor, because he was amazing as the troubled deputy Branch Connolly in Longmire.

Lucien dispatched a hit man to kill the jelly-spined Xavier, who was in a holding cell a the precinct. Given that this isn't the first time someone's been killed in their holding cells, I would think that some additional security precautions would have been taken!

This episode was full of big events, without the distraction of a random Case of the Week, for which I was quite grateful. Plus, there was quite an abundance of memorable lines; be sure to hop on over to our Grimm quotes page for a rundown of some of the highlights.

One other thing worth mentioning: Eve's flashback to the start of her "training" featured Meisner hitting her quite forcefully. The first time I saw it, it made me feel very uncomfortable. I realize that she was attempting to attack him and she's a dangerous supernatural creature, but there was still something disturbing about seeing him smack her like that.

Some final assorted thoughts before I turn the discussion over to you, my fellow Grimmsters:

  • Anyone else notice that the characters spent an inordinate time on the phone with each other throughout the episode? It was actually rather remarkable!
  • Meisner once again shows how awesome he is, all but swatting down Trubel's attacks.
  • The unfortunate jailer, a normal human, was unable to handle seeing the hit man in full woge, which was a nice continuity nod. Poor guy.
  • I'm pretty sure that Juliette/Eve only blinked once during her entire appearance in this episode. It was pretty disconcerting the way she just stared.
  • New opening credits sequence, now featuring Eve!

So, what did you think of "Eve of Destruction"? Were you shocked that the Wesen Council was wiped out? What do you think Black Claw will do next? Are you a fan of a Nick/Adalind relationship? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

If you missed this episode, you can always watch Grimm online to catch up on all the action! Grimm Season 5 Episode 8, "A Reptile Dysfunction," is scheduled to air Friday, February 5, 2016 at 9/8c on NBC. Until then!
